MultiScale Material Science for Energy and Environment research partnership could reduce the carbon footprint of materials such as concrete.
MIT President L. Rafael Reif joined a high-level delegation of French officials at MIT on Friday to sign an agreement extending the research partnership behind MultiScale Material Science for Energy and Environment (MSE2), an international joint unit, or UMI (reflecting the French term "unité mixte internationale"), that has produced groundbreaking research into such complex materials as concrete and shale rocks. Reif signed the agreement with Alain Fuchs, president of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), and Yvon Berland, president of Aix...

“MultiScale Material Science for Energy and Environment” is an international joint unit (UMI) between CNRS and MIT at the center of a strategic association covering research, training and education in partnership with industry. The UMI aims at “bottom up” simulation and experimental verification of properties of complex multiscale materials — from atomic-scale to microns, and from nanoseconds to years. Materials with important technological, economic, energy and environmental applications will be addressed, including cement, ceramics, nuclear fuels, steels and geo-materials. The UMI hosts French researchers at MIT, each for a number of years, and is seen as a gateway to further collaboration between CNRS and MIT. The UMI, which is housed at MIT under the auspices of the...

International Joint Unit will be staffed at MIT with French researchers and MIT professors.
On June 15 2102, MIT President Susan Hockfield and Alain Fuchs, president of France’s National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), marked the beginning of an institutional partnership between MIT and CNRS. The International Joint Unit (UMI) between CNRS and MIT, called the MIT-CNRS-UMI, is at the center of a strategic association covering research, training and education in partnership with industry. From the point of MIT, the UMI establishes an institutional partnership with the internationally recognized CNRS while preserving its institutional center on...

France-MIT Forum on Energy unveils new joint laboratory, explores other potential collaborations.
This week, MIT President Susan Hockfield and other Institute representatives traveled to Paris for the France-MIT Forum on Energy, an event to advance collaboration between Institute researchers and their French counterparts. The event also marks the 10th anniversary of the MIT-France program. The forum, organized by the MIT-France Program, the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) and the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, took place Wednesday in Paris, serving to formalize new large-scale ventures between France and MIT as well as provide a platform to discuss other potential partnerships.“French research on energy is first rate, and for MIT faculty and students to collaborate with labs in France is a great opportunity,” says Suzanne Berger, the Raphael Dorman-Helen Starbuck Professor of Political Science and director of the MIT-France Program. “In puzzling over how to...
